We’re not just here to help with your actual vehicle service & repairs, though; we can also help answer your electric car service questions! So let’s dive right into them.

1. Do Electric Cars Need Oil?

True battery electric vehicles, or BEVs require no engine oil, because there’s no internal combustion engine to lubricate! The main role of car oil, after all, is to lubricate the moving parts during the combustion process. If there’s no engine to speak of — just an electric powertrain — there is, thus, no need for oil. The exception to this rule is hybrid vehicles, which do need oil and routine oil changes similar to a conventional gas-powered car.

2. Do Electric Cars Have Horsepower?

Yes, EVs have horsepower, although it’s not always measured as “horsepower”, per se. in fact, some EV carmakers measure the power of their EVs as Kilowatts, or “KW.” You can easily convert KW to HP via a quick Google search.

3. Do Electric Cars Have a Transmission?

Electric cars do have transmissions but generally not ones with multiple speeds, like traditional 6-speed or 8-speed transmissions. Internal combustion engines need several gears with varying gear ratios to output power. Electric motors, on the other hand, produce the same amount of torque, regardless of RPM within a specific range. In other words, creating torque via revving is not required necessary with electric motors, because EVs produce power instantaneously.

4. Do Electric Cars Have Alternators?

No. Instead, EVs, as well as hybrids, have a DC-to-DC converter. This recharges the 12-volt battery using power from the battery pack.

5. Do Electric Cars Have Catalytic Converters?

Catalytic converters are not included in electric cars. They’re typically used to remove byproducts of internal combustion engines, and since EVs don’t have these kinds of engines, they’re not at all required.

6. Do Electric Cars Have Exhaust Systems?

No fuel is burnt with electric cars, so no byproducts are produced that require emission through a tailpipe or exhaust system. So no, EVs do not have exhaust systems.

7. Do Electric Cars Have Heaters/Do Electric Cars Have Air Conditioning?

Yes they do! By definition, electric cars rely on electricity stored in the batteries to run the heating and cooling systems. Instant heat in the winter is especially important in electric vehicles.

8. Do Electric Cars Last Longer Than Gas Cars?

Gasoline, or internal combustion, cars have their perks. They can travel further on a single fill-up and it’s easier (right now anyway) for drivers to replace parts as they wear out. Electric cars, on the other hand, can last longer with fewer repairs. They also cost much less to “fill up”; an EV charge could cost you just a couple dollars, whereas a full gas tank could cost you $50-100!
